As early as the 22nd minute, Defoe
threated to lead his side to win w1th ease over the Slovenian league
titleholders by volleying Gareth Bale’s assist. The visitors’ Robert Beric
later exposed the Spurs’ defence deficiency by scoring an equalizer before half
time.
Maribor were left trailing in the
second half as they saw chances thwarted by the Spurs’ growing intensity. Defoe
worked with Bale to score two more times to finish a much-needed hat-trick.
