Raikkonen returns to Formula 1

Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen is returning to Formula 1 after signing a two-year contract with Lotus Renault.

Raikkonen won the drivers' crown with Ferrari in 2007 but he left the sport just two years later in search of a new challenge.

He joined the World Rally Championship but has continually been linked with a return to Formula 1 and in recent weeks was reported to be in talks with Williams.

However, that deal collapsed leaving the 32-year-old questioning whether he would be able to return but Renault stepped in an offered him a two-year contract to join the team, which will be called Lotus from 2012.

"I'm delighted to be coming back to Formula 1 after a two-year break, and I'm grateful to Lotus Renault GP for offering me this opportunity," said Raikkonen.

"My time in the World Rally Championship has been a useful stage in my career as a driver, but I can't deny the fact that my hunger for F1 has recently become overwhelming.

"It was an easy choice to return with Lotus Renault GP as I have been impressed by the scope of the team's ambition. Now I'm looking forward to playing an important role in pushing the team to the very front of the grid."

Renault were left searching for a new driver after Robert Kubica revealed that he would not be ready for the start of the 2012 season as a result of the injuries he sustained in an accident in February.

"All year long, we kept saying that our team was at the start of a brand new cycle. Backstage we've been working hard to build the foundations of a successful structure and to ensure that we would soon be able to fight at the highest level," team owner Gerard Lopez said.

"Kimi's decision to come back to Formula 1 with us is the first step of several announcements which should turn us into an even more serious contender in the future. Of course, we are all looking forward to working with a world champion. On behalf of our staff, I'd like to welcome Kimi to Enstone, a setting that has always been known for its human approach to Formula 1." - http://www.setanta.com

Head ends F1 involvement

Williams co-founder Patrick Head has decided to end his day-to-day involvement with the Formula 1 team.

Head insists that he is not retiring, however, but will instead concentrate on the company's hybrid power programme.

"I am not going to be directly part of the Williams Formula !programme next year, but it is not retirement," said Head.

"I am going to be doing some work for Williams Hybrid Power, which may sound a bit dry and dull but it is actually quite high tech and quite interesting."

Head, who formed the team in 1977 with Sir Frank Williams, has just overseen as director of engineering Williams' worst season in their history. The Grove-based marquee scored just five points to finish ninth in the constructors' championship.

"I certainly didn't have an ambition to stop my involvement in Formula 1 with a season like this last one," Head admitted.

"But when I look at what specifically I can do to assist (technical director) Mike Coughlan, (chief operations officer) Mark Gillan and (head of aerodynamics) Jason Somerville, I came to the conclusion that it isn't really enough to justify me carrying on doing the same thing.

"It's not interesting for me and it's not good for the company, so I decided to have a change of focus, that's all." - http://www.setanta.com

MARK WEBBER WINS BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX
Mark Webber finally buried his bad luck and consigned his winless streak to the history books to leave him with a smile on his face heading into Formula One's winter break.

There was a touch of good fortune to his season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix win, but nothing less than assisted Lewis Hamilton two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi when Sebastian Vettel sustained a first-lap puncture.

On this occasion, double world champion Vettel suffered a gearbox problem that started on lap 12 at Interlagos and resulted in Webber passing him for the lead on lap 30.

How Vettel managed to finish the race, and avoid back-to-back DNFs is a mystery to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

Instead, Vettel crossed the line 17 seconds behind Webber to give the pairing their 11th one-two and underline their dominance this season.

After taking the chequered flag for the first time in 26 races, and seventh in his career, Webber said: "Seb did a great lap for pole yesterday, but I had a little bit of the rub of the green. -  - http://www.sportinglife.com

Record-breaker Vettel takes pole

Sebastian Vettel will start the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix in pole position; the 15th time in 2011 he has qualified at the top of the grid.

Vettel saved his best for last as he stormed through with a sensational 1:11.918, although he appeared to be holding back during the middle part of his lap, and as the chequered flag was lowered there were jubilant scenes in the Red Bull garage as the world champion broke yet another record.

It will be an all-Red Bull front row after Mark Webber knocked McLaren's Jenson Button off the front row with his very last lap.

Button, however, will be happy as he has continually struggled for a good qualifying position at Interlagos and he will start from third alongside his McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso had to settle for the third row yet again as he posted the fifth fastest time of the afternoon. He will have the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg for company with Felipe Massa seventh ahead of Adrian Sutil in the Force India.

The home crowd gave Bruno Senna a rapturous reception as he qualified in ninth, beating seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who was happy to finish tenth.

After topping the timesheets in the final practice session, Vettel posted the fastest time in Q2 and it looked as though his 1:12.268 would be enough to take pole.

However, he refused to take anything for granted and as the clock ticked down to he crossed in 1:11.918 to storm to a record 15th pole position in a season.

In what could be his final grand prix, Rubens Barrichello missed out on the chance to reach Q3 but he produced a strong performance to qualify in 12th and any rain could see him finish in the points on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Paul di Resta had to settle for 11th in the Force India with Vitaly Petrov disappointing in 16th. - http://www.setanta.com

Button eyes Webber scalp

Jenson Button would be happy to end the season with a race victory instead of finishing second in the drivers' championship.

The 2009 world champion was Sebastian Vettel's main challenger for most of the season and with just one race to go he is lying second in the championship, ten clear of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Mark Webber is fourth and Button admits he would love the opportunity to finish above the Australian because it would mean McLaren denying Red Bull a one-two.

"It is not so important, I suppose, but I think it is nice to know over a season that you can finish in front of some very good drivers and to finish in front of a Red bull would be great considering Seb won the title in a Red Bull and Fernando was strong in a Ferrari," he told reporters at Interlagos.

"If I get a chance to beat them of course I will be happy - but we would rather come away with a victory than finishing second in the championship. It's still nice if you come away with second.

"I am pretty happy with what I achieved. We haven't been quite good enough to win the championship but we have had a pretty strong year."

Button enjoyed one of his strongest years in Formula 1 and he is delighted with what he achieved throughout the campaign.

"For me I am happy with what we have achieved this year in getting the most out of the car," he went on.

"Japan stands out as a great race, but also other races I have not been able to win, so I take more comfort from the results, not about beating my team-mate over a whole season." - http://www.setanta.com

Lewis Hamilton fears backlash from Felipe Massa fans in at Brazil GP

LEWIS HAMILTON has braced himself for a backlash from Felipe Massa fans in Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.

The duo have had a string of acrimonious bust-ups this season, clashing six times with tempers boiling over twice as Massa called for his McLaren rival to be banned for his ruthless driving. The Brazilian hero even hit the Brit twice on the arm during a live TV interview after the Singapore GP before giving him a sarcastic ‘thumbs-up’, provoking an angry response from Hamilton.

Massa rebuffed Hamilton’s latest attempt at a reconciliation minutes before the start of last month’s Indian Grand Prix – and was then penalised for ramming the McLaren star in the race.“I am sure there will be a few Felipe fans who will be less happy,” said Hamilton.“I have no idea what the reaction will be. I just know that I have had great support every time I have been to Brazil.”

Hamilton is revered in Brazil for carrying the mantle of their favourite son, Ayrton Senna, but is equally disliked as the tormentor of Sao Paulo’s current F1 star, born within a stone’s throw of the Interlagos track. Although their rivalry has reached new heights this season, it has rumbled on for years.Hamilton was booed on the start grid of their 2008 title showdown here and fans then cheered Massa’s victory believing they had a new champion, only to see Hamilton snatch glory seconds later on the final corner of the final lap.- by http://www.mirror.co.uk

Massa vows to improve

Felipe Massa has a 'very strong desire' to help Ferrari improve for the 2012 Formula 1 season.

An encouraging pre-season failed to transfer into results with Ferrari managing just one race victory this season, while Massa himself faces the prospect of ending the year without a single podium finish.

The Brazilian has been warned that he faces a battle to retain his seat in 2013 if he fails to improve next season but has assured the team he is determined to turn things around.

"This year has not gone so well, but we have tackled it with our usual fighting spirit and that is what we will take forward to next year, when we hope to have a very different sort of championship to this one just ending," said Massa.

"The intention is to be competitive right from the start, fighting for the win in every race. This has not been a fantastic season for me, but neither has it been for the team.

"So as a driver, I have a very strong desire which I share with the whole team to give one hundred percent to improve for next year."

The final race of the season in Brazil will be Massa's 100th grand prix start with Ferrari and he insists there is plenty more to come from him in the coming years.

"This will be a very important weekend for me, as it will also mark the end of the tenth year since I first raced in Formula 1, although not ten years of competition, as I was a Ferrari test driver in 2003," he added.

"Fortunately, I am still young and there is more to come, but ten years is still a landmark in an F1 driver's career.

"Then there are my six years racing for the Scuderia, competing in one hundred Grands Prix for the team, which makes me one of the drivers who has raced the most for this team.

"Therefore, putting it all together, ten years of Formula 1, one hundred races with Ferrari and all of it at home in Brazil, makes this something really special for me. It will be an emotional time and what I would like to add to it all would be a good result come Sunday afternoon." - http://www.setanta.com

Brazil Grand Prix Race

This weekend Formula 1 heads to Brazil for the nineteenth and final race of the 2011 season – just days before people up and down the country prepare to open the first door of their advent calendars, this long campaign that began back in March will finally reach its conclusion.

And Interlagos is a fine place to end any season. The circuit may have the worst facilities on the calendar, and located in a dangerous neighbourhood (just ask Jenson Button, who had his highly-trained police driver to thank last year after narrowly escaping an armed gang), but on Sunday there will be a carnival atmosphere amongst the fans as they welcome F1 on its annual visit to Sao Paulo.

The championships may have been settled many races ago and there is little chance of a Brazilian winning their home race this weekend, but still this final Grand Prix will still be worth watching as the loose ends of a frantic season are tied together, scores are settled, and teams try to send out a message for their rivals to take away over the winter. - http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk

Pirelli pleased with 2012 progress in Abu Dhabi

Formula One tyre suppliers Pirelli took advantage of this week’s young driver test at Yas Marina to try out some of their new P Zero tyres that will be seen next year. New front and rear profiles were assessed, together with a new potential soft compound.

“Even though the young drivers did not have the same experience as the regular drivers, we were able to collect plenty of useful information and feedback,” said Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery.

The new soft compound is designed to wear more evenly and have increased thermal resistance. This reduces the possibility of blistering and should lead to more flexibility in terms of pit-stop strategies and even closer racing in 2012.

The new front and rear profiles are squarer than they were previously, which again provides a more even wear rate. The latest tyres also generate more grip from the rear, which tends to provoke more understeer and also enhances the possibilities for overtaking.

“The results of the test were very much in line with our expectations, so we’re pleased with the work that has been carried out, in very demanding track conditions,” added Hembery. “This gives us a useful base to work from as we continue to refine our 2012 range of tyres, which should bring even more performance and spectacle to Formula One next year.”

Teams were given six sets of new development tyres to assess this week - with two sets per prototype - together with two sets of Pirelli’s current soft tyre as a base. They were also allowed to use however many tyres remained of their 2011 testing allocation, which comprises 100 sets for the year.

Vergne fastest as Abu Dhabi test ends

Jean-Eric Vergne completed a lockout of the top of the timesheets throughout all three days of the Abu Dhabi young driver test by setting fastest time for Red Bull.

The Frenchman's fastest time from morning running, just over four tenths off Sebastian Vettel's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix pole position time, was enough to earn him top spot, with Mercedes driver Sam Bird ending up second fastest, almost two seconds behind.

Bird spent much of the day evaluating 2012 exhausts for Mercedes, but was able to set some quicker laps in the afternoon to climb up the timing screen. Like many of the teams, Mercedes focused on development work rather than gunning for fastest laps, with Bird completing 102 laps.Ferrari tester Jules Bianchi was fourth fastest ahead of Oliver Turvey, who was back on duty for McLaren. Max Chilton, returning for Force India, ended up fifth fastest after improving his time late on.Chilton's best lap came just after a red flag, caused by Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber. Chilton improved his time both before and after the stoppage, meaning that his best run of the day was interrupted.

Mirko Bortolotti, who has taken over driving the Williams from Valtteri Bottas, was seventh fastest, four tenths faster than STR returnee Kevin Ceccon.Team Lotus driver Alexander Rossi was ninth fastest, 5.366s off the pace. The American struggled a little with space in the cockpit because of his height, which made it difficult to complete long runs, but he managed 74 laps during the day.Renault's Jan Charouz was 10th fastest ahead of Stefano Coletti, the latter only driving in the morning before relinquishing his STR seat.Nathanael Berthon did 51 laps on his first first day as an F1 tester after completing nine laps yesterday. He outpaced Virgin pairing Robert Wickens and Charles Pic.Teams were running a mixture of 2011 and 2012 Pirelli tyres, as well as conducting running with a range of differing fuel loads and car specifications, making a fair comparison of the fastest times difficult.-http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

Exclusive Whitmarsh Q&A: McLaren will turn tables in 2012

They may have won six Grands Prix this season, but finishing runner-up to Red Bull in both titles has been hard for McLaren to swallow. A tricky winter off-track was followed by a difficult spring on it, and only in the summer did the British team’s fortunes finally turn - by which time it was too late. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh explains what went wrong, how they put it right - and why they will do better in 2012. Plus he discusses the Hamilton-Button dynamic, resource restriction agreements, team politics and more…

Q: Martin, McLaren are the 2011 runners-up. Is that good enough?
Martin Whitmarsh: No it is not. But you have to say that Sebastian (Vettel), Red Bull, and (Red Bull chief technical officer) Adrian Newey did a fantastic job. Sebastian in particular did a spectacular job. But we are not here to come in second, so inevitably we are not satisfied with this. We’ve secured second place in the constructors’ championship and we are second in the drivers’ championship, but it’s a frustrating position to be in to be honest. We were second last year as well and we definitely don’t want to make it a habit. Now we could look back and ponder about it or we can turn it into positive motivation. We have had six great wins this year and we can even make it seven great wins this year - and that’s the goal - so we are focusing on that. We will try and win again in Brazil. Sebastian will again clearly be the guy to beat even if he was unlucky in Abu Dhabi. There are a lot of views about the invincibility of Red Bull. Certainly Mark (Webber) is a very good driver. People keep asking us how we plan to beat Red Bull but on most weekends we do beat 50 percent of them. Unfortunately, right now, we are not beating the other one if he stays in the race! (laughs) As a team we’ve made some mistakes. We haven’t done as good a job as I like us to do but hopefully we will end the season with another win. Then we press the reset button, spend a few weeks away in the winter and next year is another year.- http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2011/11/12804.html

Renault boss will wait for Kubica

Eric Boullier says that Robert Kubica will be given all the time he needs to recover and that he is ‘morally committed’ to the Polish driver.

The Renault chief’s team was unable to call on Kubica at all for the 2011 season, following the horrific rallying crash that led to several serious injuries for the driver.

His recovery is ongoing, and his team’s line-up for next year has not yet been confirmed, but – having previously set an October deadline for Kubica – the Frenchman now says there is no deadline. Indeed, he says would even be willing to bring him back in mid-season should that situation arise.

"The latest I have is that he cannot commit to any deadline, so we have to discuss a common communication plan. We obviously want him to be back," Boullier told Autosport.

"If it has to be during the course of next year, why not? There are some conditions that we need to discuss, and I need to discuss with his manager that once he knows he cannot be back, or if he cannot be back, then any scenarios we now need to properly communicate.

"I am patient because I am morally committed for him, he was very important for us. We play the game, we played every game for him and I am morally committed.

"If I can have a scenario where he can be back, even during the course of the year, I will try to make it, but obviously I cannot do more." - http://www.setanta.com

Whitmarsh: Win can be springboard

McLaren team chief Martin Whitmarsh says that Lewis Hamilton showed his championship-winning potential with Sunday’s win in Abu Dhabi.

It is some time now since Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was crowned world champion for a second successive season, but his early puncture allowed his McLaren rival to usurp first place early on and hold it for an ultimately comfortable win.

And Whitmarsh believes that that one race – after a tumultuous year for the 2008 title-winner – can be the springboard for renewed success in the years to come.

Hamilton’s team boss was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “There is no reason why, in my mind, he cannot raise himself to another level now.

"I think this was a great recovery from where he has been in the last few months, and he can do greater things even than this.

"I think he is pretty happy with this one. You can see that in him and that enables people to drive with greater confidence and to attack that little bit extra.

"We are looking forward now to getting to Brazil and having another race, which is a good feeling for us all.

“I think this season has been a challenging one for him. He has done a great job here and he will focus on the positives of that.

"And, as I say, he will now be saying 'when can I get to Brazil? I love that circuit!' It is a fantastic circuit, and he will want to win there too.

"This win also means both of our drivers have got three great wins apiece this year and I am sure both of them think they can make it four by the end of the season (only one can as there is just the Brazilian Grand Prix remaining)." - http://www.setanta.com

Hamilton 'ecstatic' with win

Britain's Lewis Hamilton says he is 'ecstatic' following his win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton was the main beneficiary of an early puncture for world champion Sebastian Vettel, who was forced to retire early from the race.

The 26-year-old took full advantage and claimed his first victory since July after holding off Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Despite the dominant nature of the win, Hamilton is refusing to make a comparison with his championship winning season in 2008 but says he is on the verge of something big.

"I don't know. It is early days but this is definitely a start," he said. "It's rare for us to be able to control a race from the front, but today I did have the pace and was able to put in the laps when Fernando was going quicker. "

That was one of my best drives of my career.

I looked after my tyres and I managed the gap.

Being able to hold off one of the best drivers in the world is tough to do." - http://www.setanta.com

F1 News Update 11/13

Vettel claims record-equalling pole

Double Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel dug deep to seize pole position at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and equal Nigel Mansell's 1992 record of 14 in a single season. The 24-year-old German, who has already clinched his second title with Red Bull, saved his best for last after McLaren's Lewis Hamilton had been fastest in the first two phases of qualifying as well as final practice.

Hamilton will start the season's penultimate race alongside on the front row, with team mate and fellow Briton Jenson Button third.Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber, seemingly no closer to a first win of the season, lines up fourth. The pole was the 29th of Vettel's career and 17th in 18 races this year for Red Bull.
"I think it's going to be a long, fun race," said Vettel, who has won both of the two races held to date at the Yas Marina circuit, where last year he won from pole to become Formula One's youngest champion.
"They will be very quick in the race...it will be a long fight to the chequered flag," he added, grinning at the McLaren drivers sitting on either side in the post qualifying news conference. "I'm confident and ready.

We expected if we got everything right to be closer, much closer than in practice," added the German, who hit the barriers on Friday."I felt there was more in the car and we just had to get to it. Overnight we tried to find where the problem was and this afternoon it was already much better."Hamilton, who lapped just nine thousandths of a second faster than Button, appeared to have done enough for his second pole of a troubled season but Vettel pipped him right at the finish."I'm happy with today," said Hamilton. "And to not have any penalties is a blessing for me."Ferrari's double champion Fernando Alonso and Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa shared the third row, with the latter well away from Hamilton after six collisions between the two this year.

Lewis Hamilton says he is in a much better frame of mind here as his relationship problems with Nicole Scherzinger have fallen into a different perspective since the last three races. "I've got some positive energy back," he said. "I have surrounded myself with good people in the last few weeks. I'm optimistic about things in life and where I'm going."

He ridiculed claims by McLaren principal Martin Whitmarsh after the Indian Grand Prix that his form has been affected by his team-mate Jenson Button's run of success. "He made some comments which I disagree with," he said. "It's rubbish. There's not a lot of people who really understand the issues I've had this year, the problems I've been going through, and which I've been going through for the last two years. Jenson doing great is great for the team. But that's not affecting the way I'm performing."

Asked about his latest clash with Felipe Massa, at the Buddh International Circuit, he said: "I haven't looked back," he said. "I've only been looking forward, to a much better result here [in Abu Dhabi on Sunday]. This circuit should really suit our car. If I had qualified and started from second place in India," he said, referring to the penalty for running too quickly in practice by yellow caution flags, "I would never have been anywhere near Felipe."

Hamilton added that he is looking forward to a break from the sport, "the chance to let the dust settle on all the negativity there's been this year", but only because he knows there are still two chances left to add to his two race wins this year. - http://www.independent.co.uk
