Montezemolo: Ferrari can still share 'common vision' with rivals

Luca di Montezemolo sees no reason why Ferrari can’t continue to work constructively with their rival teams in 2012 despite now being outside the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA).

Formula 1’s most iconic outfit, along with world champions Red Bull, plunged the future of FOTA into doubt at the start of this month when they resigned from the teams’ umbrella organisation in the wake of increasingly tense disagreements over the way forward for the sport’s Resource Restriction Agreement.

Ferrari, one of the main instigators behind the body’s formation in 2008, claimed FOTA’s “drive has run its course”, while adding that they had become tired of the recent “stalemate” surrounding some of the key issues up for discussion.

Speaking at his traditional Christmas dinner with the Italian media this week, Montezemolo, Ferrari’s long-time president, said while the team had grown weary of FOTA’s quarrels in recent times, he remains confident they can continue to work alongside their key rivals for the good of the sport.

“We have left FOTA of our own accord and without consulting anyone else, because we were tired of the compromises dragging it down,” Montezemolo said.

“And let’s be clear, if one is part of a club then everyone has to respect its rules, otherwise what’s the point?

“However, I still believe that we can have a common vision between the biggest teams when it comes to the future and I will push to the maximum to seek out common objectives.

“All we want are clear rules and interpretations.”-http://www.itv.com

Year to Forget: Williams

Piquet and Mansell may well not have got on but at least they were given cars to win world championships. Relations between Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado seemed amicable enough but would not Sir Frank Williams have traded a fight or two in favour of a return to the good old days?

Given the way things turned out in 2011, Sir Frankmight well have offered the same simply for a podium appearance; he might even have offered to go out and buy the handbags. It really has got that bad for the nine times' constructors' champions, who managed just five points in 19 races - points that wouldn't have existed two seasons ago.

The team's FW33 chassis, with its low-slung gearbox designed to improve air flow to the rear beam wing, was a bit of a departure but one that evidently did not work. The nadir came in Abu Dhabi, where Barrichello and Maldonado occupied the very back row of the grid. That wasn't an accurate reflection of their pace (an oil leak prevented Barrichello from setting a time while Maldonado picked up a 10-place grid penalty after exceeding his allotted engine allowance for the season) but it was a nevertheless a stark indicator of how far the team's stock has plummeted in recent years. - htp://www.sportinglife.com

Rookie of the Year: Paul di Resta

The season brought another clutch of unobtrusive baptisms, although comparing the arrivals of Di Resta, Sergio Perez, Maldonado, Jerome d'Ambrosio and Daniel Ricciardo to the stellar ones of Vettel and, in particular, Hamilton is not entirely fair.

None of the fivesome (Ricciardo only completed a part season) appeared out of his depth, although Di Resta and Perez caught the eye the most - if for no other reason than they were in the best machinery.

Perez would have finished seventh in his very first race were it not for the fact the rear wing of his Sauber broke the rules. The 21-year-old Mexican had the speed to match Kamui Kobayashi (they were equals in qualifying) but without his team-mate's adventurousness. Whatever one thinks of the Japanese driver's approach, though, it yielded more points than that of Perez.

Experience also won out at Force India, where Adrian Sutil bested Di Resta - and just shaded him in terms of qualifying pace too. When comparing the benchmarks, however, it should be remembered that Sutil was contesting his fifth full season - all with the same team - whereas Kobayashi's was just his second.

And we should also bear in mind that, while Di Resta took part in a number of free practice sessions last season, he had spent the four previous seasons concentrating on the German DTM series - a rather different discipline than single seater racing.

Di Resta is staying put next season and assuming Schumacher does indeed call it a day for a second time at the end of 2012, then another good year, not to mention the long-time backing of Mercedes-Benz, will place the 25-year-old Scot right in the frame for a move. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Race of the Year: Canadian Grand Prix

Button's win at Suzuka was his fifth for McLaren but first in totally dry conditions. It came towards the end of a season in which he finished above team-mate Hamilton in the standings - a real achievement when one remembers some of the predictions made when, even as the new world champion, Button left Brawn GP at the end of 2009.

As a driver noted for his smoothness, there is an irony that Button seems to excel in races that run anything but. The most chaotic this year took place in Montreal and took over four hours to complete after a storm hit the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. By that stage Button had already been hit by Hamilton ("What's he doing?") and was then to collide with Alonso.

The latter incident punted him down to 21st and last place just past half distance but as the track started to dry, there then came a response: back in the points 12 laps later, Button was up to second after passing Mark Webber and Michael Schumacher on laps 64 and 65 respectively before taking the lead when Vettel ran off the dry line on the 70th and last lap.  - http://www.sportinglife.com

Ferrari hint at Vettel interest

Luca di Montezemolo has hinted that Ferrari may be interested in signing Sebastian Vettel at some point in the future.

Ferrari president di Montezemolo heaped praise on double-world champion Vettel, suggesting that the German may become a target for the Italian squad.

"Vettel is a brilliant driver," said the 64-year-old. "He’s young, but seems very intelligent in the way he carries himself. He has a great future, let’s see. I like drivers who use their head more than their right foot.

"But (a move) would be on the condition that we don’t upset the balance within the team. Today we have a balance. I don’t want drivers who will have a problem with each other."

Vettel's current contract with Red Bull is set to expire at the end of the 2014 season. - http://www.setanta.com

Button: Our time is coming

Jenson Button feels McLaren are edging closer to the world championship and he believes that 2012 will provide him with his best opportunity to win one for the team.

Button moved from Brawn GP, now Mercedes, to McLaren after winning the world championship in 2009 and, while he has not added to his titles, he has gone from strength to strength with the team.

He won three races in 2011 to finish second behind Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel in the championship but, more importantly, he out-scored team-mate Lewis Hamilton is seven of the last nine races.

The Briton is delighted with how the season went and he feels the time is coming when McLaren will beat Red Bull to the world championship.

"We haven't quite won the world championship in the last two years, but I have won quite a few races with this team and I feel that our time is coming," Button said.

"We are in a very good position. And it couldn't be better really so we are very excited about 2012.”

Reflecting on his time at McLaren, Button added: "We have spent two years together now. It has flown by, and it is quite scary that it has been two seasons already.

"My aim was to arrive at McLaren and win races, and be with a team that can always give me a chance of winning the world championship.

"I feel that we have really improved and I feel that with a tiny bit more improvement we can fight for more victories in 2012." - http://www.setanta.com

Raikkonen: I'm as fast as before

Kimi Raikkonen is adamant he will be as fast as he was before leaving Formula 1 when he returns to grand prix racing with Lotus next year.

The Finn has secured a two-year deal with the team and will make his comeback in 2012 after a two-season absence from Formula 1.Raikkonen, the world champion in 2007, says his motivation is higher than ever before and is confident he will be as quick as he was before he went rallying.

"I am more motivated than ever and I don't think I've lost any speed," said Raikkonen on Lotus Renault's website. "Getting on top of the tyres will be the hardest thing, of course, but I'm not really worried.
"Although the technical regulations don't seem to change much, they apply to a lot of areas and quite a few elements will have to be re-designed. As a result, the cars will be significantly different next year. The order could be shaken up, which will make things very interesting."

The Finn says his visits to the team's factory have left him upbeat about his prospects for the year ahead.
He added: "My two visits to Enstone have been great. The first one, at the team's Christmas party, made me realise how much support I have there. The second one, last week, allowed me to understand that this team has not been world champion by coincidence.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

McLaren plan February launch

McLaren have confirmed their 2012 challenger will be ready for the first winter test in early February.

Last week Ferrari announced they would be taking the cover off their new car just days ahead of the Jerez test on February 7-10.

McLaren had been expected to delay the launch of its new car until after Jerez but tougher test regulations have prompted the team to have the MP4-27 ready in time for the first test.

"The MP4-27 will break cover on Wednesday February 1 2012. Where? Well, we’re keeping the location close to our collective chests until after the new year!" a statement on the McLaren website read.

Under new rules for 2012, teams cannot test cars until they have passed the mandatory FIA crash tests and McLaren's announcement leaves Mercedes as the only team in the top four to delay their launch until the second pre-season test in Barcelona on February 21. - http://www.setanta.com

Schumacher reveals F1 struggles

Michael Schumacher believes the lack of in-season testing is the reason why he hasn't been a success at Mercedes yet.

The seven-time world champion has struggled badly on his return to the sport and has yet to secure a podium finish as he, and his team, continue to disappoint.

Despite making some progress with their car, Mercedes still found themselves someway off the likes of Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren in the race for top honours.

Schumacher believes his failure to elevate Mercedes' status in F1 is down to the fact that teams have cut down on the amount of testing they do during the season.

"I thought that I might be on the podium at least a couple of times," Schumacher told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

"Together we have to work hard to improve performance but we are not afraid of that. In F1 there are no magic wands.

"In the past we did a lot of testing. Today not, so I have had some problems with the tyres.

"I have not learned how to interpret them correctly.

"Previously I came to the race weekend knowing what was coming. Now the tests don't come until Friday and I am still getting used to this system." - http://www.setanta.com

Bernie: F1 won't be big in USA

Bernie Ecclestone does not believe that Formula 1 will be particularly popular in the United States when it returns there next year.

The series last visited the U.S.A in 2007, but a purpose-built circuit in Austin, Texas will play host to a grand prix in 2012.

A deal, meanwhile, has been finalised to race on a street circuit in New Jersey the following year. Even with two events on the calendar, however, Ecclestone does not expect F1 to be 'big' in the States.

"We've got a maximum of two races in America and when you consider the country is as big as Europe and we've got several races in Europe, it's difficult," he told Al Jazeera.

"If we had a lot more races there and a lot more television (coverage), it would be okay.

"It's a bit like the rest of America in that they want to see a profit before they start something and it's not easy to do that."

The United States Grand Prix will be the penultimate event of the 2012 Formula 1 season, taking place in November of next year.

ARGENTINA GEARS UP FOR F1

Argentina could be back on the F1 calendar from 2014 when a new track near Buenos Aires is scheduled to be completed.

On Friday, a ground-breaking ceremony was held at the 4.7 km Velociudad Speedcity circuit in Zarate, 100 km from the capital, which designers Populous said will be capable of returning F1 to the South American country for the first time since 1998.

"The plan is for a circuit capable of delivering a Formula One event," John Rhodes, Associate Principal of Populous, said.

"The key is to offer a category one circuit. Once the facility is there, then it's down to a promoter...the issue is to have a high performance circuit capable of holding a MotoGP then add the necessary requirements for a Formula One race.

"The main 4.7 km circuit will be good for F1 and endurance races like Le Mans, it's a good, sensible length."

The $100million project will be completed in two phases and will include South America's first driver trainer centre and academy. The first phase, a 3.1 km track, 4x4 off-road circuit and team garages, is scheduled to be completed in 14 months.

The second phase will extend the track to its full length, making it eligible for a licence from the FIA governing body.

South America's only active F1 track is Interlagos in Brazil, which hosted the final race of the 2011 season last month.

There have been 20 Argentine Grands Prix in all, with Michael Schumacher the most recent winner at the Autodromo Oscar Alfredo Galvez on the outskirts of Buenos Aires almost 14 years ago.

Populous are also responsible for the recent re-design of British Grand Prix venue Silverstone and are involved in designing a new F1 track in Mumbai.

The design firm also planned the London 2012 Olympics Stadium and the Soccer City stadium which hosted last year's World Cup final in South Africa. http://www.sportinglife.com

Formula 1 team Lotus Renault have revealed they want to secure the world drivers' championship in the next three years.

They  managed to finish in fifth place last season as Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel dominated proceedings once again to secure a clean sweep of the titles.

Lotus have two new drivers at the helm for the next campaign, with former world champion Kimi Raikkonen being partnered by Romain Grosjean.

He said: "The plan is to be world champions in two or three years' time."

Force India to reveal all

The Force India F1 team is set to unveil its driver line-up for 2012 on Thursday.

The day has not been officially confirmed as the date for a team announcement, but they are definitely set to reveal all this week after a hold-up up to now.

Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil both did well for the progressive team in 2011, while former Williams man Nico Hulkenberg  - a reserve driver this year – will also feel he has made a strong case to be returned to a top two role.

The two men for 2012 will come from that three, with team co-owner Vijay Mallya refusing to say exactly when the rest of the world will know. The drivers themselves must be told first, but fans can expect to know the decision by Thursday.

Team vice-principal Rob Fearnley has been quoted by planet-f1.com as saying: "There are a number of things holding it up.

"Obviously, it is only fair we deal with the drivers. We have three very talented drivers and we need to make sure the one who is going to be disappointed has the best opportunity to position himself.

"If you remember, he (Mallya) said 15 December (Thursday). That would be consistent with what he has always projected. I'm sure that's the date he's always set." - http://www.setanta.com

 Raikkonen injury not serious

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen has injured his hand in a crash in a snowmobile race but the team has insisted that the injury is not serious.

The 32-year-old returns to Formula 1 with Lotus in 2012 after two years in the world rally championship.

The team, who raced as Renault in 2011, signed up the 2007 world champion less than two weeks ago.

The team's Twitter account stated: "Kimi is absolutely fine. There's nothing to worry about, he only has a sore wrist.

"He might have it checked again on Monday, but that's all."

Raikkonen, who will be partnered by Swiss novice Romain Grosjean, is the replacement for Robert Kubica.

Mercedes to test new turbo engine

Mercedes-Benz is set to run its 2014 turbocharged Formula 1 engine on a dyno test bed imminently according to reports, as technical chiefs played down concerns the new power units will not sound great.

With development of the new V6 engines pushing on, Mercedes-Benz sources have confirmed that the company's first version of its 2014 engine will be ready 'soon' - although a final date has not yet been sorted.
And with much interest about how these new engines will sound, amid concerns from Bernie Ecclestone and grand prix promoters that they will not be as loud as the current V8s, the man heading the design has no such worries.

Mercedes-Benz engineering director Andy Cowell said: "The engines are high revving. You don't get the maximum fuel flow rate until you are above 10,500rpm, and the maximum revs are at 15,000rpm. Plus, with six pipes going into one turbocharger, a single tail pipe from six cylinders revving at 15,000rpm I think will sound very nice."

The move to V6 turbos for 2014 has also prompted fears about a fresh spending war between manufacturers, but Mercedes-Benz is also confident now that strict technical regulations have kept costs under control.
This means that the idea of an engine-specific Resource Restriction Agreement has been dropped because it is no longer necessary.

Thomas Fuhr, managing director of Mercedes-Benz High Performance Engines, said: "The biggest achievement with this, irrespective of a physical RRA, was to get sensible technical regulations.
"The FIA, together with the manufacturers, did a great job. A lot of things are pre-defined, so you don't spend money developing it - you know there is a single turbo, so it makes things much, much easier. That is the biggest benefit out of these regulations.

"If you control it technically, it is much easier saying you can control it here and there. You see on the chassis front how complicated it has got. The FIA has it in hand with the engines, and there is no way you can go around this topic."- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/

Sebastian Vettel's domination of motorsport has continued after he was named as the International Racing Driver of the Year.

The German ace won his first world title in 2010 with victory in the last race to hit the top of the standings for the first and most important time in the season but his second success came in stark contrast as he dominated the year from start to finish.

Following a season in which he claimed a record-breaking 15 pole positions as well as 11 race victories, Vettel became Formula One's youngest ever double world champion and has now been honoured at the Autosport awards.

"I don't know where to start to be honest. Last year was my first time picking up one of these trophies, and it means a lot," Vettel said.

"I felt very honoured when I walked down the stairs and everyone, including lots of past and present racing drivers, were clapping, giving me appreciation and respect for what I have achieved. It made me feel very special."

Red Bull's RB7, driven by Vettel and Mark Webber, was also successful as it was named as the Racing Car of the Year. - http://www.setanta.com

BUTTON PAYS TRIBUTE TO WHELDON

Jenson Button has hailed Dan Wheldon as "the guy you'd get out of bed to race" at a memorial for his late friend.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Wheldon, who died from injuries suffered in a crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in October, was awarded a posthumous lifetime achievement honour at the Autosport British Racing Drivers' Club awards.

Button was a friend and competitor of Wheldon since childhood and said: "We grew up together and had so many great experiences together, it's an era of drivers that have gone on to achieve a lot.

Wheldon, from Olney in Buckinghamshire, achieved stardom in the United States where he won the IndyCar Series - and its signature race - in 2005 and repeated his success at Indianapolis this year.

And Button noted: "The competition there is fierce and to come in and win the Indy 500 like he did, and the championship, and also to win the Indy 500 this year, first race in 2011, it's phenomenal, you don't see that very often."

Another British driver to enjoy success Stateside, Scotland's Dario Franchitti, joins Button at a kart racing event to remember Wheldon and Button was delighted to see such a gathering of stars. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Ogier the champion of champions

The Race of Champions title continues to elude Formula 1’s best after French rally driver Sebastien Ogier won the 2011 staging on Sunday.

After their German team Nations Cup triumph on Saturday, the home fans in Dusseldorf were hoping that reigning F1 king Sebastian Vettel or seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher might end the sport’s hoodoo at the festival of motorsport.

However, there was not an F1 face to be seen in the final as Ogier defeated Le Mans 24 Hour Race winner Tom Kristensen.

As for the F1 men in the field, Schumacher knocked Vettel out in the last eight before going down to Kristensen in the semi-final.

Ex-F1 star Davod Coulthard made it to the quarter-finals as well, but was beaten by DTM touring car champion Martin Tomczyk. Ogier then conquered Tomczyk en route to the decider.

Renault's Vitaly Petrov and tester Romain Grosjean had been eliminated in the heats, which had been coasted through by Vettel, Schumacher and Coulthard.

As for the winner, a delighted Ogier was quoted by AFP as saying: "Just to reach the final was great on my first appearance, so to win it is just fantastic.” - http://www.setanta.com
