Ogier the champion of champions
The Race of Champions title continues to elude Formula 1’s best after French rally driver Sebastien Ogier won the 2011 staging on Sunday.
After their German team Nations Cup triumph on Saturday, the home fans in Dusseldorf were hoping that reigning F1 king Sebastian Vettel or seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher might end the sport’s hoodoo at the festival of motorsport.
However, there was not an F1 face to be seen in the final as Ogier defeated Le Mans 24 Hour Race winner Tom Kristensen.
As for the F1 men in the field, Schumacher knocked Vettel out in the last eight before going down to Kristensen in the semi-final.
Ex-F1 star Davod Coulthard made it to the quarter-finals as well, but was beaten by DTM touring car champion Martin Tomczyk. Ogier then conquered Tomczyk en route to the decider.
Renault's Vitaly Petrov and tester Romain Grosjean had been eliminated in the heats, which had been coasted through by Vettel, Schumacher and Coulthard.
As for the winner, a delighted Ogier was quoted by AFP as saying: "Just to reach the final was great on my first appearance, so to win it is just fantastic.” - http://www.setanta.com
