Bernie: F1 won't be big in USA

Bernie Ecclestone does not believe that Formula 1 will be particularly popular in the United States when it returns there next year.

The series last visited the U.S.A in 2007, but a purpose-built circuit in Austin, Texas will play host to a grand prix in 2012.

A deal, meanwhile, has been finalised to race on a street circuit in New Jersey the following year. Even with two events on the calendar, however, Ecclestone does not expect F1 to be 'big' in the States.

"We've got a maximum of two races in America and when you consider the country is as big as Europe and we've got several races in Europe, it's difficult," he told Al Jazeera.

"If we had a lot more races there and a lot more television (coverage), it would be okay.

"It's a bit like the rest of America in that they want to see a profit before they start something and it's not easy to do that."

The United States Grand Prix will be the penultimate event of the 2012 Formula 1 season, taking place in November of next year.
