Maldonado got grid penalty 12bet update 11/02

Pastor Maldonado will be penalised ten places on the grid for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after suffering a gearbox failure in India.

Williams have confirmed that Maldonado's engine is no longer viable and as a result he will have to use a new power unit at the penultimate grand prix of the season.

Teams are limited to eight engines per season and as Maldonado has already used his quota for the year he will take a ten-place grid penalty at the Yas Marina on Sunday week.

Maldonado's team-mate Rubens Barrichello will use his eighth engine in Abu Dhabi but he faces a grid penalty if he is forced into a change for the final race in Brazil.

"We need to ensure we have a trouble free weekend and then it is possible that we can make it into Q3," Williams chief operations engineer Mark Gillan said.

"Although as Pastor will use a ninth engine in Abu Dhabi, due to damage incurred following the gearbox failure in India, he will therefore incur a subsequent 10-place grid penalty." - http://www.setanta.com
